Regretful-tattooHave you ever done something and regretted it later? You’d probably be hard-pressed to find someone who would answer “no” to this question. Indeed, most people have at least one (potentially humorous) story about something that seemed like a good idea at the time, only to discover later that it wasn’t the best choice.

One of the most common examples of this are tattoos. Whether it’s the name of someone you were once in a relationship with, a sports team that didn’t do as well as you thought they would, or just an image of something you’ve outgrown, seeking treatment for tattoo removal in The Woodlands is something a good many people can understand.

How Does Tattoo Removal Work?

Tattoos are permanent designs created by the injection of ink below the top layer of skin. In order to target them directly, Dr. Myers uses what is known as Q-switched laser technology. Essentially, this technique employs multiple types of lasers to break up specific pigment colors in the dermal layer where they reside. During your procedure, Dr. Myers will:

  • Apply numbing agents and/or offer sensory blocks to help alleviate any discomfort you might experience during the operation.
  • Use the Q-switched lasers to target specific pigments in the tattoo with the types most effective at dealing with each. Because the lasers don’t penetrate deep into the skin, there is generally little to no bleeding involved.
  • If necessary, you will be scheduled for additional appointments to complete removal of the tattoo. Each session only takes a few minutes but Dr. Myers allows about 3 weeks in between treatments to allow your body to naturally absorb and remove the broken-up pigments.

Laser tattoo removal is very safe and effective, but it may not be able to remove all tattoos. The size, colors, location, and technique used to apply them all factor in to the removability of a tattoo.

If you have tattoos you’d like to remove, but aren’t sure if it’s possible, the best thing to do is schedule an appointment with Dr. Myers. Drawing from his many years of experience with this procedure, he can discuss the feasibility of success with you and help determine the best course of treatment to achieve the results you want.

It is difficult to predict the number of treatment sessions that are required for tattoo removal. Tattoo removal involves multiple treatment sessions. The initial treatment sessions usually produce a more dramatic result than subsequent sessions. The closer the pigment is to the surface and if there is a smaller volume of the pigment within the skin, then fewer treatments may be necessary. An average of 5 treatments is common. These treatment sessions are separated by 8 weeks. Tattoo removal is not without risk. Patients are counseled that scarring may occur, colors may not lighten sufficiently, and occasionally colors that contain iron oxide such as flesh-tone, red, and white inks might paradoxically darken. If the tattoo was painful when it was applied then it will be uncomfortable during the removal process. Local anesthetic blocks can be performed to lessen the pain associated with tattoo removal.
