While you may be seeking a surgical intervention for weight loss (whether minor or significant), liposuction is generally not used for this purpose. Liposuction for Weight Loss

The truth is, there is no such thing as liposuction for weight loss. If you are overweight, unfortunately liposuction is not a viable option to get you into the shape you desire. There are several options for surgical intervention if you are extremely overweight. However, if you have a smaller amount of weight to lose, but do not have good muscle and skin tone, diet and exercise are likely to be the ideal solutions for you.

You may ask why – why can’t liposuction be the answer to even minimal weight loss? There is actually only a small amount of fat that is safe to remove at one time, and liposuction is meant for contouring your body, and not for weight loss.

Body Contouring with Liposuction

If you are in relatively good shape, and have some smaller areas of fatty tissue that just won’t budge, liposuction can help contour the parts of your body that are holding onto the fat.

Liposuction can be performed on your chin, abdomen, sides (love handles), legs and thighs, and other areas where these stubborn areas of fat are stored. The procedure will help to define and shape the areas you choose to address.

On average, you can expect to lose two to five pounds from your liposuction procedure. Of course, if more or less fat is removed, you will weigh that much less. Regardless of which areas of the body you choose to have included in the procedure, the weight loss will not be significant.

What if I Have Excess Skin?

If you have had children, or lost a significant amount of weight, you may have a lot of excess or sagging skin in your abdomen and other parts of your body. While liposuction is a body contouring procedure, it will not remove excess skin.

If you have a significant amount of excess skin, this can be causing you to weigh more than you desire. The best option is to consult with the doctor about skin removal surgery and a tummy tuck. This is generally the only viable way to lose weight when it is the skin that is weighing you down. Of course, this means that liposuction is not an ideal procedure for you.
